Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad. Lotería de Navidad.

Whichever local term you use in native Spanish (the country of origin of this Christmas raffle), these names refer to the same game – the Spanish Christmas lotto. It is officially one of the oldest lotteries in the world with its beginning having been cemented by a branch of the Spanish Public Administration in 1812. This happened due to a need to raise funds to cover the costs of the War of Independence.

The Local Spanish Event that Creates Winners Everywhere

In terms of the total prize payout, the Spanish Christmas lotto is arguably the most lucrative lottery to play worldwide. In 2012, it was calculated that if every single Christmas raffle ticket available was to sell, the amassed total payout of prizes would be worth an astonishing €2.52 billion (70% of all ticket sales).

The total amount of all prizes in the first category, El Gordo (“The Big One”), would amount to a very healthy €720 million which would then be distributed amongst 180 winning tickets – each ticket’s prize value would therefore amount to €4 million when equally divided.

It is of little wonder then that the Christmas lotto is immensely popular with Spanish customers with a startling 98% of the population estimated to participate each year. Players have a 1 in 6.5 chance of winning a prize and as an added incentive (in case the jackpot prize money wasn’t enough), all winnings are paid out in a lump sum.

More on El Gordo de Navidad

The Spanish Christmas lotto bears more similarities to a raffle than to a typical lottery draw. In fact, it forms part of the Loteria Nacional Extra series of super raffles or ‘Sorteos Extraordinarios’.

As per standard raffle game format, players do not choose their own numbers but rather select from pre-printed tickets already containing sets of numbers of which only a certain amount are released. It is therefore possible for the Christmas raffle tickets to sell out before the draw takes place.

Ticket Sales for El Gordo de Navidad

Each five digit series is repeated across multiple Spanish Christmas lotto tickets. The exact amount of times a digit is repeated will vary from draw to draw but it can sometimes be as many as 195 times. These full raffle tickets are divided further into tenths, known as ‘decimos’. Most players buy a tenth of a ticket (a decimo) but there is also the option to go for a full Christmas raffle ticket as well (known as a “billete”). Please note that lotto247.com only sells individual shares otherwise known as decimos, so you will not be able to play for a full ticket through our website.

  • As a decimo holder, if the digits on your ticket matches, you will win one-tenth of the prize money allotted to the winning ticket.
  • As a full ticket holder, if the digits on your ticket matches, you will win the full raffle prize amount of money.

Winners of this Game Can Find Their Lives Changed Overnight

Imagine having a 10% chance of being the winner of massive sums of money – El Gordo de Navidad opens this door for those that play the game. See the 2023 prize tier values for the Christmas lotto below (prize amounts show the values won by each of the 160 full ticket holders in each raffle tier).

  • First – €4,000,000.00
  • Second – €1,250,000.00
  • Third – €500,000.00
  • Fourth – €200,000.00
  • Fifth – €60,000.00

Please note that the above values are only applicable to full-ticket holders. The value awarded to raffle winners on our site for the purchase of one share (a decimo) will equal 10% of the values listed above.

The Big Draw for the Christmas Lotto

While the entry process for the Christmas lotto itself is rather unique, you may be even more surprised at the actual raffle draw procedure: it has not changed since the very first draw in 1812 – around the same time Santa was born! The winning numbers and the associated prize value with the raffle are drawn from two separate ball containers, and these are then sung out loud to the public by school children from the San Ildefonso school (formerly an institution reserved for orphans of Spanish public state servants). This lengthy process is repeated for each container for the many thousands of prize tiers in the draw. As a result, the draw itself can therefore take up to 3–4 hours to complete, with the children working about eight to nine shifts – equal to the amount of frames of numbers to be drawn from the container.

While the actual draw takes place on the 22nd of December every year in Madrid, Spain, tickets are already on sale in various places a good few months prior to the raffle events. The public attending the event are more than likely to be dressed in extravagant lottery-related clothing and hats, which just further enhances the festive atmosphere. The entire event is broadcast on video by Televisión Española and Radio Nacional de España, as well as various other media channels.

Where Do Raffle Tickets Come into Play?

El Gordo is one of the super raffle events or ‘Sorteos Extraordinarios’ offered in the Loteria Nacional Extra series of raffles.

All players are given the chance to take home their share of a whopping €2.7 billion prize pool. There are 193 series in total which means 193 sets of tickets from 00000 to 99999. This ensures that up to 193 people can potentially have the same ticket number, each winning the WHOLE first prize of €4,000,000.

This amazing raffle from Loteria Nacional Extra boasts impressive winning odds of 1-in-3 and, in addition, all winnings are paid out in a lump sum. A mandatory 20% tax collection is applied by the Spanish Government on any set winnings over €2,500.00 for these raffles.

The El Gordo is played in a raffle style with players choosing a digit between 0 and 99,999. Players therefore have a total of 100,000 numbers to choose from.

All 100,000 numbers are sold across 193 ‘ series, each instance being divided into 10 shares or ‘decimos’.
